Das Gestell, 2017
Starting point of the film is a letter written by a Japanese philosopher to Martin Heidegger. In the letter Heidegger is consulted on how to deal with the progressing technologisation and how humans and technology can coexist. The film's montage montage - of letters, paraphrased philosophical works, conversations and biographical notes together with Super 8 recordings of landscapes, urban and natural, inhabited and deserted places - connects different times, places and people. It shines a light on the complex mediation and conciliation of cultures, nature and technology, of past and present, of dreams and facts.
Philip Widmann (born 1980 in Berlin) studied Cultural anthropology at the University of Hamburg and Visual Communication at the University of Fine Arts Hamburg. Since 2016 Widmann is part of the postgraduate programme "The Photographic Dispositif" at Braunschweig University of Art. His film and video works have been shown at numerous international film festivals and art institutions, including Wexner Center for the Arts, WRO Biennale Wroclaw, Berlinale, International Film Festival Rotterdam, New York Film Festival, Mostra São Paolo, FID Marseille, CPH:DOX and Visions du Réel. In 2014 Widmann was fellow at Akademie Schloss Solitude in Stuttgart; in 2015 at Villa Kamogawa/Goethe-Institut in Kyoto as well as the Srishti Institute of Art, Design and Technology/Goethe-Institut in Bangalore.
