cento. eating while listening session, with Juliane Schmitt & Tamara Goehringer
Performance and communal supper in the courtyard of St. Mauritius
Thu 22 October, 6—8 pm
Meeting point: Courtyard of St. Mauritius Church, Mauritiuskirchplatz, 50676 Cologne
No registration required! The event is free of charge.
On 22 October, Juliane Schmitt and Tamara Goehringer invite visitors to a performance and a communal supper in the courtyard of St. Mauritius Church with "cento. eating while listening session". The meal is eaten in silence, as in medieval monasteries. There, a single voice accompanied the meal: while hands and mouths ate, ears listened. Reading was a service in its own right at the table and an integral part of the shared meal.
A cento is a text newly assembled from lines that already exist. Among other things, the artists combine passages from the Rule of St. Benedict and the writings of Hildegard of Bingen to create a new reading. Two voices alternate, accompanied by sound loops. At the same time, the sounds of eating become audible: bread is broken, cups are set down, cutlery moves. Whether intentionally or incidentally, these sounds form a shared composition. The meal becomes a score.
Visitors are invited to eat and listen for as long as they wish.
About the artists
Juliane Schmitt lives in Brussels, Tamara Goehringer in Frankfurt. Their collaboration moves between the two cities. If this route were a body, Cologne would lie at a joint. A joint connects and holds things together. It can enable movement, but also tension, stillness or resistance. In their collaborative practice, they explore dependencies between body and voice, material and action, space and perception.
Juliane Schmitt (aka smittness) works with sound and spatial storytelling. Her materials include the voice, electronic instruments and self-built devices. She investigates how time takes shape and is experienced in the body: through repetition and resonance, between silence and movement. This gives rise to situations of attentive listening in which time unfolds through minimal gestures. Find out more about Juliane's work here: https://www.smittness.com/
Tamara Goehringer works with voice and body. The body is never entirely one's own. Inhabiting it becomes a horror. Her research follows figures outside the norm, simultaneously revered and rejected. From them, the voice escapes as proof that it continues to resonate and becomes a body in its own right. Find out more about Tamara's work here: https://www.tamaragoehringer.com/
