A creative workshop about home, farewells, and light

Every person carries memories that transcend national borders, decades, and generations. For many families with a history of (Italian) migration, these memories are marked by departure and farewell, by home and foreign lands, by people who had to be left behind, but also by new friendships.

In this workshop, we honor these complex feelings and give them a visible, protected place: we design memory jars in which small treasures, photos, and meaningful items find a place. Participants bring small personal items such as photos, pieces of fabric, shells from the beach of their childhood, an old key from their homeland, a piece of lace, a yellowed ticket, herbs from Nono's garden, etc.

Participants also have the opportunity to take photos of themselves (self-portraits) or have their photo taken during the workshop. Perhaps there are items of clothing, larger objects, or other items that do not fit into the jar. These photos can be printed out and attached to the memory jar, so that the jar preserves not only material treasures, but also a personal picture of one's own history.

In this workshop, we want to use symbolic gestures to express what perhaps cannot be put into words. Farewells and memories are given space and are preserved protectively in a jar.

We would be delighted if the jars could remain in the exhibition until January 11. However, this is not a condition for participation and can be decided individually.
